When choosing a fresh pineapple, ripeness cannot be judged solely on the color of the pineapple. As pineapples are produced in various tropical locations, new varieties have emerged. Maui Pineapple Company donated a dozen Maui Gold pineapples to the city of Honolulu to settle Hannemann’s bet with Athens-Clarke Mayor Heidi Davidson. The University of Georgia campus is in Athens.

According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin,

Maui Pineapple also bet on the Warriors, one pineapple for each member of the Georgia football team. The company is sending several dozen Maui Gold pineapples to the Bulldogs team.
