u-of-hawaii warriors.jpgPineapple factored into the Sugar Bowl game between the University of Hawaii and the University of Georgia - or at least the post game. Hawaii Governor, Linda Lingle and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann made a friendly wager over the game with Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and Athens-Clarke Mayor Heidi Davidson. The Hawaiian leadership promised Hawaiian pineapples if the Georgia Bulldogs prevailed while the Georgians backed up their team with peaches. The Georgia Bulldogs beat the University of Hawaii Warriors 41-10.

Maui Pineapple Company donated a dozen Maui Gold pineapples to the city of Honolulu to settle Hannemann’s bet with Athens-Clarke Mayor Heidi Davidson. The University of Georgia campus is in Athens.

According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin,

Maui Pineapple also bet on the Warriors, one pineapple for each member of the Georgia football team. The company is sending several dozen Maui Gold pineapples to the Bulldogs team. It is also sending several dozen pineapples to the Warrior team next week along with a mahalo card signed by employees of parent company Maui Land & Pineapple Company to show their appreciation.
